mimiJ's Story
I have had an interest in pottery for as long as I can remember. I am particularly interested in old crocks and bean pots and between auctions, estate sales and flea markets, I have a collection numbering around 75. So, it only made sense that I try my hand at creating my own pottery and after taking a workshop at Sawmill Pottery in 2017, I was hooked. Since then, I have made plates and bowls and casseroles and flowerpots and so much more, but I oftentimes find myself circling back to creating crocks and bean pots to add to my collection.
A few years ago, when my son and his girlfriend announced their engagement, I offered to make a few pieces for their wedding centerpieces. Somehow I turned that conversation into volunteering to make bowls filled with succulents for each of their guests to take home. Over the course of 11 months, I made over 125 bowls (all while maintaining my full time job). It was a bit stressful to say the least, but I am so happy I did it.
I oftentimes will say I cannot make two pieces alike and that used to frustrate me but I have come to realize that it actually is the beauty of pottery. Each piece is unique and oftentimes is an expression of a mood or feeling I am having that day. I love color so I truly do enjoy experimenting with different color combinations, as well as different clay bodies. Most of my work is done on the wheel but I do occasionally enjoy hand building. I must give credit to the incredible teachers at Sawmill Pottery. They have taught me so many interesting techniques, encourage me to find my inner creativity and always offer help and positive reinforcement. And I truly treasure the spirit of comradery, constant encouragement, and friendships I have made with my fellow potters.
